What Child Is This?

What Child is This? invites us to ponder the mystery and majesty of Christ’s birth. It reflects on the wonder of the shepherds as they received the angelic announcement in Luke 2:8-15. These humble men, watching their flocks by night, were the first to hear the “good news of great joy.” What child is this, they must have asked, who would bring peace to the earth and favor to humanity?

The angel’s message declared that this child is no ordinary baby but the Savior, the long-awaited Messiah, and the Lord. Born in the humblest of settings—a manger—this Child reveals the profound truth that God’s glory often appears in the most unexpected places. The shepherds, awestruck and eager, left their fields to find this miracle in Bethlehem.

The heavenly host’s proclamation, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,” reminds us that this Child brings reconciliation between God and humanity. He is the Prince of Peace, the fulfillment of centuries of prophecy, and the hope of salvation for all who believe.

As the shepherds gazed upon Jesus, their hearts were filled with worship and wonder. Like them, we are invited to come and see the Savior who was born for us. What child is this? He is Emmanuel—God with us—the one who humbled Himself to take on flesh and dwell among us.

This Christmas, may we kneel in awe, remembering that this Child is our Savior and King. He came to redeem us, to bring peace, and to offer eternal life. Let the carol’s question stir our hearts anew, leading us to worship the Christ child, who is the reason for our joy and celebration.

The Shepherds and Angels

Luke 2:8-15
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,  and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

VERSE 1
What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

CHORUS
This, this is Christ, the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

VERSE 2
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

VERSE 3
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings;
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

A Child is born!

Have you ever studied the words of Isaiah 9:6-7 (they begin, “For to us a child is born”) and realized just how strange they are? At first glance, the grand titles and expectations seem absurd to place on a child.

It’s a strange picture – a small child, hunched over like Atlas, a parliament building set on his shoulders, wearing a crown, perched on a throne, with a very troubled look on his face, as if to say, “What in the world am I doing here?”

And yet, this is exactly what these verses tell us to be true. Of course, there was no actual building, no real throne, and no crown but one of thorns. But the thought is still astounding – this child, this baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, would be the fulfillment of these promises.

He would be, and is, the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. It is this astonishing prophecy that we keep in mind when we ask the question, “What child is this?” –hymnary.org
