Story Behind the Song

Charles Albert Tindley, born in 1851, faced significant hardships from an early age. Despite being born into slavery and losing his mother young, he was determined to educate himself. He worked long hours in the fields and attended night school to learn to read and write. Eventually, Tindley moved to Philadelphia, where he started as a janitor at Bainbridge Street Methodist Episcopal Church. His dedication led him to become the church’s pastor, growing the congregation to over 10,000 members. [1]
