Joy To The World

The carol Joy to the World celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ, the Savior of all. This echoes the angel’s announcement in Luke 2:10-11, bringing “good news of great joy” to the world. Jesus, born in Bethlehem, came to save us and reign as Lord and King.

Psalm 98:4-6 calls all creation to worship with joyful singing and praise. Like the carol’s refrain, it invites us to “repeat the sounding joy,” lifting our voices in celebration of Christ’s rule. His coming is not just for a few but for all people, inviting the entire earth to join in the melody.

The heavens themselves declare God’s glory, as noted in Psalm 19:1, reminding us that all of creation rejoices in His greatness. Even nature—fields, seas, and forests—joins in praising God, as described in Psalm 96:11-12. This reflects the carol’s call for “heaven and nature to sing” together in harmony.

Joy to the World reminds us that Christ’s coming is not just about His birth but about His reign and His promise to make all things new. As we sing this beloved song, let us open our hearts to His rule, rejoicing in His grace and truth.

May the Christmas season fill us with the joy of knowing Jesus, our Savior and King, and inspire us to share this joy with others.

VERSE 1
Joy to the world, the Lord has come
Let Earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven, nature sing

VERSE 2
Joy to the World, the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy

VERSE 3
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as, the curse is found

VERSE 4
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And the wonders of His love
And the wonders, wonders, of His love

Words by Isaac Watts (1719) Tune: ANTIOCH/ Published in 1731 hymnals

Sing for Joy

Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Psalm 98:4-6 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises. Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody. With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout joyfully before the King, the Lord.

Psalm 19:1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

Psalm 96:11-12 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; Let the sea roar, and all it contains; Let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.
