God is Love Let Heaven Adore Him (Hymn)

God is Love Let Heaven Adore Him is a timeless Christian hymn that proclaims God’s eternal love, sovereignty, and redemption. Calling all creation to worship, the lyrics affirm that His love upholds the world, guides believers through trials, and ultimately reigns over sin and death.

VERSE 1
God is Love let heaven adore Him;
God is Love let earth rejoice;
Let creation sing before Him,
And exalt Him with one voice.
He who laid the earth’s foundation,
He who spread the heavens above,
He who breathes through all creation,
He is Love, eternal Love.

VERSE 2
God is Love and He enfoldeth
All the world in one embrace;
With unfailing grasp He holdeth
Every child of every race.
And when human hearts are breaking
Under sorrow’s iron rod,
Then they find that selfsame aching
Deep within the heart of God.

VERSE 3
God is Love and though with blindness
Sin afflicts the souls of all,
God’s eternal loving-kindness
Holds and guides us when we fall.
Sin and death and hell shall never
O’er us final triumph gain;
God is Love, so Love for ever
O’er the universe must reign.

Story Behind the Song

God is Love: Let Heaven Adore Him is a hymn penned by Timothy Rees, a Welsh Anglican bishop born in 1874. Rees served as a chaplain during World War I, where he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.

After the war, he became the Bishop of Llandaff in 1931. His hymn, emphasizing the encompassing nature of God’s love, first appeared in “The Mirfield Mission Hymn-Book” in 1922.

It gained wider recognition when included in the “BBC Hymn Book” in 1951, set to the tune ABBOT’S LEIGH, composed by Cyril V. Taylor in 1941. Taylor created this tune while working for the Religious Broadcasting Department of the BBC during World War II.

The hymn has since become a staple in Christian worship, celebrated for its message of divine love and unity. [1] [2]

Divine Love and Sovereignty

God is Love Let Heaven Adore Him is a hymn that proclaims the nature of God’s love as revealed in creation, providence, and redemption. It calls for all of heaven and earth to worship Him, recognizing that His love is not a mere feeling but an eternal truth that governs the universe.

God is Love: let heaven adore Him reflects the universal call to worship, aligning with Revelation 5:13, where every creature in heaven and on earth declares praise to God. Worship is not limited to humanity; all creation testifies to His greatness (Psalm 19:1).

He who laid the earth’s foundation affirms God as Creator, echoing Isaiah 48:13: “My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens.” Creation itself is a demonstration of His love, showing His power, order, and care for all that exists.

God is Love: and He enfoldeth all the world in one embrace expresses the extent of God’s love, which reaches every nation and people. Acts 17:26 states that God made all nations from one man, and John 3:16 affirms that His love is for the whole world.

However, while God’s love is universal, salvation requires faith in Christ (John 14:6). The hymn does not contradict this but emphasizes that God’s love is always present, sustaining and upholding His creation.

God’s eternal loving-kindness holds and guides us when we fall assures believers that even in weakness, they are not abandoned. Psalm 37:24 declares, “Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”

God’s love does not waver in the face of sin but leads His people toward repentance and restoration (Lamentations 3:22-23). Sin and death and hell shall never o’er us final triumph gain speaks to the victory found in Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57 declares, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” While sin affects humanity, it does not have the final word because God’s love secures eternal life for those who trust in Him.

This hymn presents a biblical view of God’s love—eternal, sovereign, and redemptive. It does not diminish sin’s reality but declares that love reigns over all. To truly adore Him, one must respond to this love with worship and faith, knowing that His love is both the foundation and fulfillment of all things.

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the majesty, and the splendor; everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11

“We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

“The Lord says, ‘My thoughts and my ways are not like yours. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways and thoughts higher than yours.'” Isaiah 55:8-9

“The Lord Almighty has sworn an oath: ‘What I have planned will happen. What I have determined to do will be done.'” Isaiah 14:24
